How to Substitute Oil for Butter

Butter is made from animal fats and thus contains lots of saturated fat, as compared to vegetable oil, which is primarily composed of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

1. Substitute with olive oil

Use only 3/4 olive oil for the required butter amount. You can follow the replacement chart below

Butter

Olive oil

1 teaspoon

¾ teaspoon

2 teaspoons

1 ½ teaspoon

2. Substitute with canola oil

The amount of canola oil you use varies, depending on different recipes and cooking procedures.

  • Baking. Use 10 tablespoons canola oil for each cup of butter.
  • Cooking on flame. Use 14 tablespoons of canola oil for each cup of butter.

3. Substitute with coconut oil

This works best when you are making cookies, bread and brownies.

  • You can either use 50-50 butter-coconut oil combination
  • Or you can choose to use 3/4 cup of coconut oil for one cup butter.
