What Is Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream Used For?

Nystatin is an antimycotic or antifungal drug that is yellowish or light tan in color, usually in powder form, that is slightly water soluble and alcohol soluble. This antibiotic medication prevents fungal growth on the skin.

Triamcinolone acetonide is a crystalline powder that has a mild odor, and is water insoluble, but highly alcohol-soluble. This is a steroid drug that reduces redness, inflammation, and swelling.

Nystatin/triamcinolone acetonide cream is soft, smooth, and tan to light yellow in color. This topical skin preparation is applied directly on the skin to treat infections caused by yeast or fungus. However, nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream uses do not include other types of infections, such as those caused by viruses orbacteria. Unnecessary use of this antibiotic may result in decreased effectiveness.

What Should I Know Before Using Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream?

Before using nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream:

• Inform your doctor/pharmacist if you have known allergies to either or both nystatin and triamcinolone, as well as other drugs.
• Tell your doctor/pharmacist what medications (prescription/non-prescription) you are currently taking, including health supplements.
• Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breast-feeding. Call your doctor if you become pregnant while using nystatin/triamcinolone acetonide cream.

Precautions

• If you are going to use nystatin/triamcinolone acetonide cream to an areain the groin, apply it sparingly. Wear loose-fitting clothes.
• If the cream is to be applied to your baby’s diaper area, avoid using tight-fitting plastic pants ordiapers.
• Nystatin/triamcinolone should not be used if irritation occurs or if symptoms worsen or have not improved within 25 days of use.

How to Use Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream Effectively

• Thoroughly wash your hands before and after using the cream to avoid reinfection.
• Before applying, wash and dry completely the affected skin. Gently rub your medicine on the skin until evenly distributed. You do not need to cover, apply bandage, or wrap the treated area unless directed by your doctor.
• Use nystatin/triamcinolone cream at the same time daily.
• Use nystatin/triamcinolone cream on your skin until you complete the full course of your treatmentto allow your infection to clear up totally.  Continue using it even if you seem to get better within a few days.
• Nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream uses are limited to external use only. Avoid getting it into your eyes.
• If you miss a dose, use it immediately as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip your missed dose and continue with your regular schedule without doubling the dose.

What Are the Side Effects of Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream?

Less serious nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream side effects include:

• Acne
• Stinging, itching, burning, or irritation of the skin
• Drying of the skin
• Change in skin color.

Stop using nystatin and triamcinolone acetonide cream and call your doctor immediately if you have signs of increased skin absorption of triamcinolone such as:

• Blurring of vision/ seeing halos around lights
• Irregular heartbeats
• Sleep problems
• Mood changes
• Weight gain
• Facial puffiness
• Feeling tired
