Symptoms of the Black Death

The Black Death, one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, killed 75 to 200 million people in the years 1348–50 CE. Victims of the Black Death will die quickly, only living 2-4 days after being infected.

Initial Symptoms:

  • Chill and fever
  • Headache
  • Exhaustion
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Back pain
  • Arm or leg soreness
  • Intense desire to sleep

Later Consequences:

  • Painful and hard swellings under arms, on necks or on inner thighs
  • Swellings will turn from red to dark purple or even black
  • Swellings will split open, ooze pus and bleed.
